Our Story Begins In GION, KYOTO, JAPAN

WELCOME to the TEPPAN TAVERN TENAMONYA!

 

Nice to meet you! We are NAOKO & HIDEKI, the owners, WIFE & HUSBAND have run our business for 20 years here. We've started our place as the LOCAL'S & NEIGHBORHOOD TEPPANYAKI IZAKAYA in 1998.

But since aroud 3 years ago, many sightseeners have come from overseas to KYOTO. That was our turning point to be a one of International TEPPANYAKI TAVERN.

We still have many Japanese regullar customers who come back to our place 2 or 3 times in a year still now.

(While we've been opening our place for 20 years, we had some Economical Depressions. So almost everyone escaped little by little from KYOTO for their families. Many restaurants opened at around same time in 1998. But only we could survive from the depressions. )

That's why we haven't changed our Menu , Price  & Atomosphere for our regular customers for 20 years.

Only few things we changed, special menu is written from in Japenese to in English.

Probably, WE ARE THE ONLY ONE FOR SERVE FINE FOOD AT BARGAIN PRICE IN GION AREA from long time ago.

Now we have many customers from overseas. But we think that we're not tourisity place & tourist trap.

Because we decided to be NON-SMORKING place from SMORKING place 2 years ago. That's why we lost many Irregular Japanese customers(Smorkers)  who sometimes came. We think that was good Dicision, lost many Japaneses, though.

 

Became a one of International restaurant must be the reasons. There are few restaurants which can treat in English in KYOTO & JAPAN. Especially, MOM & POP'S, like us.

We're BOTH CHEFS & speak English. Especially Naoko used to lived in U.S. & went around Europe on her business. That's an old story, though. She can't speak English well like old time, but she still listen English well.

 

We're not Gorgeous. We're HOMELY.

You feel like at your home(Except busy days, sorry), everyone expressed like that.

Probably, That is the rare case for customers.

That's why many customers come from overseas, we guess.

We're very happy to see you from overseas everyday.

We hadn't imagined KYOTO becomes such a famous city. And we became an International place, too.

20 years ago, we were discovered by an American lady.

She is the First customer from overseas(We still see her each Springs for 20 years.)

After then many customers from Australia, NZ, England, Belgium, SPAIN, ITALY, FRANCE and CANADA on their bussiness Before 2015. They always come & see us at their staying KYOTO still now.

Our small regret, we should've named on the place more simply... TENAMONYA is quite hard to pronounce.

Local language and very difficult to translate in English.

But we feel our name has been known little by little. That's really happy.

 

The restaurant is very small only 16 seats, but we serve fine TEPPANYAKI dish as best value in GION area. We're Japanese, understand & speak ENGLISH.

The owners HIDEKI & NAOKO (husband & wife) have run our business for almost 23 years here. The restaurant is very small, but we serve fine TEPPANYAKI dish as best value in GION area. We're Japanese, understand & speak ENGLISH. We have lots of people from overseas as well as Japanese everyday. ENGLISH, CHINESE & VEGETARIAN'S menu available!

My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic dinner at this place during our first visit to Kyoto. The place is located in a not too appealing basement. In fact, it would not be a place we'd usualky go to for dinner hadn't we read Trypadvisor's reviews. But don't make the mistake of judging it too soon: the cook and waitress are both very nice and the food...no words. We ordered a variety of fish (sole with basil), scallops, fried vegetables, okonomiyaki, sublime gyozas and all dishes were awesome. A black sesame ice cream topped a surprisingly affordable dinner. We're planning on going back tomorrow!
